Familiile jurnalistilor ucisi in Malta si Slovacia, apel puternic pentru sustinerea lui Kovesi: „Cea mai curajoasa si calificata pentru postul de Procuror European”
Familiile jurnalistilor Daphne Caruana Galizia (Malta) si Jan Kuciak (Slovacia), ucisi in urma dezvaluirilor privind fapte de coruptie, fac apel catre Consiliul UE sa o sustina pe Laura Codruta Kovesi pentru functia de Procuror European. Negocierile din Consiliu si Parlamentul European s-au blocat, joi, cele doua parti nu au reusit sa ajunga la un acord.
„Facem apel catre Consiliu sa sa aleaga cel mai curajos si calificat candidat pentru aceasta functie, o femeie facuta din acelasi aluat cu Daphne si Jan: Laura Codruta Kovesi.
(…) Doamna Kovesi stie ce sa faca pentru a prevei uciderea altor jurnalisti care investigheaza coruptia, spalarea de bani si fraudele fiscale.
(…) Romania se opune candidaturii doamnei Kovesi si face lobby pentru un alt candidat. Alegerea altui candidat decat doamna Kovesi ar transmite cetatenilor europeni semnalul ca UE acorda prioritate unui fals sentiment de armonie in detrimentul protectiei drepturilor lor fundamentale. Alegerea doamnei Kovesi ar spune ca nu exista loc de compromis in lupta impotriva coruptiei”, se afirma in scrisoare semnata de familiile jurnalistilor.

Ms Kovesi is the most qualified candidate and has shown herself willing to bring charges forward when all other institutions within a member state have failed to act, a test which no other candidate has undergone, let alone passed. The EU can no longer assume that member states will guarantee the rule of law and fight corruption of their own accord.
Ms Kovesi knows what it takes to prevent more murders of journalists who investigate corruption, money laundering and serious tax fraud.

Dear Mr Tranholm-Mikkelsen,
On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Council of the EU observed that the impunity with which attacks on the press too often occur encourages further violence against journalists. But it is also the failure to prosecute the crimes that journalists expose that results in the failure to prevent their murders.
We know this from experience. A collapse in the rule of law in our countries, Malta and Slovakia, led to the murders of our family members, Daphne Caruana Galizia and Jan Kuciak. Those same failings currently threaten the integrity of their murder investigations.
In appointing the first head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Council must now make a choice that will either give meaning to its declaration, or take it away.
We call on the Council to choose the bravest and most distinguished candidate for the job, a woman made from the same mould as Daphne and Jan: Laura Codruta Kovesi.

Daphne and Jan cried to the heavens for the criminals they investigated to be prosecuted.
Most—in Daphne’s case, all—remain free. De facto immunity from prosecution emboldened their murderers, who operated complex cross-border rackets that should fall underthe EPPO’s mandate.
Ms Kovesi knows what it takes to prevent more murders of journalists who investigate corruption, money laundering and serious tax fraud.
We know that candidatures become chips in a game of political bargaining between member states, but money laundering and the corruption of national authorities are a serious matter of cross-border security that cannot become subject to political compromise.
Romania opposes the candidature of Ms Kovesi and is lobbying for another candidate.
Choosing a candidate other than Ms Kovesi would signal to European citizens that the EU prioritises a false sense of harmony over the protection of their fundamental rights. To choose Ms Kovesi would say that there is no room for compromise in the deadly fight against corruption.
We are victims of what a failure to stand against corruption will lead to: car bombs and bullets to the head.
We call on the Council to protect and empower brave people like our wife and mother, our son and brother, and, indeed, people like Ms Kovesi herself.
The European Parliament has established that Ms Kovesi has the best credentials to lead the EPPO. An independent ranking also put her first. She has our support and we hope to count on yours too.

Echipa PE a cerut Consiliului UE, la cea de-a treia runda de negocieri sa nu cedeze in fata presiunilor Guvernului Romaniei si sa isi reconsidere pozitia fata de candidatul Laura Codruta Kovesi pentru functia de procuror-sef european. A patra intalnire pentru negocieri ar fi trebuit sa fie pe 10 aprilie insa a fost anulata.
„Parlamentul a reafirmat ca Laura Codruta Kovesi ramane candidatul preferat al institutiei pentru a deveni primul procuror-sef al noului Parchet European. In urma declaratiei de sustinere din plen a presedintelui Tajani si dupa trei runde de negocieri cu Consiliul, echipa de negociere a Parlamentului si-a reiterat sprijinul continuu acordat doamnei Kovesi, fost procuror anti-coruptie in Romania, a carei candidatura s-a lovit de opozitia guvernului roman. De asemenea, echipa a cerut Consiliului sa isi reconsidere pozitia. Procurorul-sef al Parchetului European (EPPO) trebuie sa fie selectat de comun acord intre Parlament si Consiliul UE”, a transmis Parlamentul European, printr-un comunicat de presa.
Presedintele Comisiei de libertati civile (LIBE), Claude Moraes, membru social-democrat din Parlamentul European, regreta blocajul actual din negocierile cu Consiliul UE pentru numirea procurorului-sef european.
„Dupa cea de-a treia runda de negocieri cu delegatia Consiliului, regretam profund situatia actuala de blocaj, care impiedica cele doua institutii sa numeasca procurorul-sef al Parchetului European. Procurorul-sef va juca un rol cheie in punerea in practica a Parchetului European, institutie care va contribui la combaterea infractiunilor impotriva bugetului UE”, a declarat Claude Moraes.
Vicepresedinta Comisiei LIBE Judith Sargentini a declarat ca „opozitia cu care se confrunta” Laura Codruta Kovesi din partea autoritatilor romane scot in evidenta „curajul si independenta sa, ambele fiind cerinte esentiale pentru functionarea eficienta a Parchetului European”.
„Hartuirea din partea guvernului roman a condus si la o discreditare totala a candidatului Consiliului”, a mai spus aceasta.
Presedintele Comisie CONT a PE o considera pe Kovesi „cel mai puternic si mai promitator candidat” pentru functia de procuro-sef european.
„Spre deosebire de Consiliu, Parlamentul a organizat audierile tuturor celor trei candidati selectati. Doamna Kovesi este de departe cel mai puternic si mai promitator candidat pentru acest post. Nu putem accepta faptul ca Consiliul cedeaza presiunii guvernului roman de a sustine un candidat mult mai slab. Deoarece regulamentul Parchetului European a fost slabit in timpul negocierilor, este esential ca Parlamentul sa aleaga un candidat care sa faca institutia puternica si credibila. Vorbim si despre o femeie, iar Parlamentul tocmai a cerut Consiliului sa respecte principiul echilibrului de gen. In plus, Romania nu detine in prezent niciun post cheie in UE”, a declarat joi Ingeborg Grasle, membra PPE din Germania, dupa cea de-a treia runda de negocieri.
