BUCHAREST, Romania — Romania’s prime minister on Wednesday defended an order to evict a major private television station from its premises but acknowledged that the notice period of five days was too short.

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos was summoned to Parliament to explain the move, which Senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu described as “an obvious, brutal attempt to suppress liberties.”

Romania President Klaus Iohannis also defended the station in comments made to Antena 3.

“I think that freedom of expression in the media cannot be suppressed by banal, administrative reasons,” Iohannis said. “The way the financial authorities approached this problem is at least inappropriate, if not debatable.”

The state confiscated the Antena television studios in 2014 following a court ruling to recuperate damages from a money laundering case. It issued a five day eviction notice Monday that was appealed by Antena on Wednesday. Ciolos has said that the country’s financial authorities are autonomous and he has no power to tell them what to do.

Dan Voiculescu, the former owner of Antena, began a 10-year sentence for money laundering in 2014, at which point his daughters took over the television station. The court ordered the confiscation of the TV studios to cover damages.
